There is a lot of investigative type needs when it comes to being a private investigator.  From infidelity cases to surveillance and background checks, there is a need for all of it.  The demand is high and the quantity of good P.I.'s is low.

Getting a P.I. license varies from state to state.  Some states don't require a license and some do.  Some only let you do business in that state and some states have no reciprocity.  For example, in some states to operate your own P.I. business, you have to have a business license , a compliance agent, and ever person that is doing the actual investigation has to be "registered" with that specific state.

Becoming a private investigator requires passing a thorough background check.  Also you can either obtain a license or not.  If you don't obtain your own license you'll have to work for someone that does have a license.  Also this does restrict you from a lot of duties and activities.
