Qualifications Requirement:
At least 21 years of age,

A citizen or legal resident of the United States, and

Of good moral character

Agency License
The applicant must have at least 2,000 hours of investigative experience. Attach a verified statement of your experience to the application.
Include a certificate of workers' compensation insurance.

Registrant License:
The applicant must have at least 1,000 hours of investigative experience. Attach a verified statement of your experience to the application.

Apprentice Applicant:
An apprentice must work for a licensed private investigation agency.
Application:
Once the Bureau receives your application, a background investigation will be conducted.
The application will then be reviewed by the Private Investigator Hearing and Licensure Board for recommendation of issuance.

Please allow 90 days for processing your completed application. Do not call the Bureau regarding the status of your application unless you have not received notification within this time frame.

Reciprocity: The state of Utah does not have reciprocity agreements with any other states.



Fees: An application fee of $230.25 for an agency license. This fee will license one private investigation agency and the owner or primary investigator of that agency.

An application of $130.25 for a registrant or apprentice license.
In addition to the application fee, a non-refundable F.B.I. fee of $30.25 per applicant must be submitted with each application.

A surety bond in the amount of $10,000 is required. The bond should reference section 53-9-109, and must remain in force throughout the license period. Please attach a copy of the bond.

Renewal Information: Agency license - $100
Registrant License or Apprentice License - $50
Please submit your renewal application within 60 days prior to the expiration of your license.

Utah State requires licensing for Private Investigators, Security Guards and Agencies.

Only licensed investigators can conduct investigations in Utah.

Utah Code -- Title 53 -- Chapter 09 -- Private Investigator Regulation Act

(17) (a) "Private investigator or private detective" means any person, except collection agencies and credit reporting agencies, who, for consideration, engages in business or accepts employment to conduct any investigation for the purpose of obtaining information with reference to:
     (i) crime, wrongful acts, or threats against the United States or any state or territory of the United States;
     (ii) the identity, reputation, character, habits, conduct, business occupation, honesty, integrity, credibility, knowledge, trustworthiness, efficiency, loyalty, activity, movements, whereabouts, affiliations, associations, or transactions of any person or group of persons;
     (iii) the credibility of witnesses or other persons;
     (iv) the whereabouts of missing persons or owners of abandoned property;
     (v) the causes and origin of, or responsibility for a fire, libel, slander, a loss, an accident, damage, or an injury to real or personal property;
     (vi) the business of securing evidence to be used before investigating committees or boards of award or arbitration or in the trial of civil or criminal cases and the trial preparation;
     (vii) the prevention, detection, and removal of installed devices for eavesdropping or observation;
     (viii) the business of "skip tracing" persons who have become delinquent in their lawful debts, either when hired by an individual, collection agency, or through the direct purchase of the debt from a financial institution or entity owning the debt or judgment; or
     (ix) serving civil process.

Utah licenses are only good in Salt Lake City and surrounding areas in the state.  There is no State Reciprocity in Utah.
